Alonzo Hernly Boyd Jr., age 80, of Cambridge City passed away at his home on December 21, 2010.

Hernly was a 1949 graduate of Culver Military Academy. He attended Denison University and graduated from Indiana University in 1953. He served in the U.S Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He joined his father at Wayne Trust Company in Cambridge City in 1956, becoming the fifth generation of the family owned business. Since 1968, he has served as President and Chairman of the Board of Wayne Bank and Trust.

Serving the community through successful and secure banking was his passion in life. He maintained his daily work routine at the bank remaining fully involved until his sudden death. Mr. Boyd valued and respected the trusted relationships and friendships of his employees and their commitment to the bank.

Hernly’s legacy includes his vast financial wisdom, unquenchable thirst for knowledge, love of family, the great pleasure found in his many life long friends, and unwavering love of this great nation.

When Lon wasn’t at the bank or traveling with his wife, he found no greater pleasure than playing a round of golf. As the great provider and teacher, Dad found great joy in sharing the gift of travel with his daughters and their families, including a recent 80th birthday celebration cruise.

Survivors include his wife Patricia Hensley Boyd; three daughters: Wendy (Scott Semba) Boyd of Rocklin, CA; Kristin A. (Leo) Scrougham of Brownsburg, IN; and Bonnie (Greg) Kruckenberg of Middleton, WI; stepchildren Cyndi (Kevin) Dukes of Franklin, IN; Randy (Beverly) Shedd of Elliotsville, IN; six grandsons: Matthew, Eric, Samuel, Nicholas, Kevin and Mark; sister Elizabeth (Tom) Graffis of Greencastle, IN; and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife Barbara Mueller.

A celebration of Mr. Boyd’s life will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, December 27, 2010 at the Cambridge City Christian Church with Pastor Robert Rohrman officiating. His burial will follow in Zion’s Lutheran Cemetery, Pershing, IN. Friends may call at the church at 106 W. Church Street in Cambridge City, located at the corner of Foote and Church Streets, on Sunday, December 26, 2010 from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family and Dad would be honored by memorial contributions to the new Cambridge City Public Library, 33 West Main Street, Cambridge City, IN 47327.

Dear Bonnie and Family,

We are very sorry for the loss of your father. Mr. Boyd stopped by our office last summer and I will never forget his warm smile and sense of optimism as we discussed the economy. It's amazng to consider the number of people his life touched through his family, friendships, and work at the bank and community support activities.

I first met Hernly many years ago in dealing with a mutual acquaintance in the course of my law practice. I have not been in the Wayne County area for some years, having moved to Tennessee, but I do remember fondly his warmth in dealing with others. He will be missed.

I worked for the bank for many years and always held Mr. Boyd in the highest regard. One of my favorite memories of him was the year he bought staff members holiday sweatshirts to wear to work. He walked in, arms loaded down with sweatshirts - he put them on a table and told everyone to pick one. I watched as he stood back with a smile on his face and a glint in his eye as my co-workers truly delighted in the unexpected gift.

He will truly be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you...
