Susie I (Barnard) Messer

Susie I. Messer, 90, of Hagerstown, passed on Sunday, October 15, 2023 at home surrounded by her family. She was born on September 12, 1933 in Hagerstown to Clyde and Geneva (Timmons) Barnard.

Susie was a 1951 graduate of Hagerstown High School. and on March 24, 1951 she married the love of her life, Melvin Messer and together they raised their family of 4 children. She worked as a CNA at Reid Hospital for a few years and then worked as a home caregiver. As an active member of Hagerstown Church of the Nazarene she served in many capacities during her lifetime. The most important things to her was serving God and her family. She also enjoyed quilting, sewing, canning, baking and family camping trips.

Susie is survived by her children, Steve (Thalia) Messer, Rick (Elaine) Messer, Christine (Rodney) Casteel and Scott (Ronda) Messer; 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-laws, Maxine Manifold, Beverly Messer, Marlene Bath, Margie (Ray) Weiser, Faye Barnard and Sandy Barnard; many nieces and nephews all of whom were well Loved by Susie.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Melvin C. Messer on March 16, 2011; and siblings, Esther Ames, Charles (Chob), Ernie and Paul.

Friends may call from 4 until 7 PM on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 and from 10AM until the start of the Funeral at 11 AM on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at Waskom Capitol Hill Chapel in Cambridge City. Pastor Robert Fannin will be officiating. Interment will follow at Westlawn Cemetery in Hagerstown.
