Margaret R. Hormel Obituary

Margaret R. “Maggie” Hormel, 75, of Cambridge City, passed away on May 8, 2025 at The Springs of Richmond, IN. She was born, the only child of Harold and Ruth (Judkins) Hormel on October 8, 1949 in Richmond, IN. She was a lifelong resident of Cambridge City and graduated from Lincoln High School in May, 1968.

 

Maggie had a passion for elementary education. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Ball State University in June, 1971, then earned her Masters of Arts in Education in August, 1972 from the College of William and Mary. In order to obtain her T-5 certification for the State of Georgia in the pilot Early Childhood program, she attended Georgia Southwestern University for a course in the spring of 1974 and the fall and winter quarters during 1974-75 at at Valdosta State College. She worked for a short time at Western Wayne Schools and then retired from Centerville Schools after over 30 years.

 

Maggie was very active in her community, she worked in the history room of the Cambridge City Library for many years, was a member an secretary of the Helen Hunt Club, active in the Nettle Creek Players in Hagerstown, was a longtime member of Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Beta Pi Chapter of Cambridge City and was named the 2012 National Psi Ote of the Year. As a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Cambridge City, Maggie devoted many hours teaching bible study and helping with numerous church activities.

 

She is survived by her cousins and longtime caregiver, Susan & Scott McConnell; many cousins and close friends. Maggie was preceded in death by her parents.

 

Friends may call from 10 AM until the start of her funeral service at 11 AM on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at Waskom Capitol Hill Chapel in Cambridge City. The members of Psi Iota Xi will conduct the sorority’s memorial service at 10:50 AM. At the conclusion of the funeral, burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Cambridge City.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 238 W. Main St., or the Cambridge City Library, 600 W Main St., Cambridge City, IN 47327.
